JERUSALEM: The Israeli government has moved to rely on Starlink satellite internet service to provide Internet access to the war-torn region. It is reported that the Israeli government is negotiating with Elon Musk’s Space X in this regard. Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi has confirmed this.
Karhi said that besides being able to deliver broadband internet in Israel, it will be useful to all the local administrations and mayors in the conflict-affected areas. Currently Starlink service is not available in Israel.
Starlink is a service that provides Internet access anywhere on Earth directly from satellites without the help of optical fiber cables. Earlier, Starlink had provided Internet service in Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia.
A major advantage of Starlink is that it can provide uninterrupted internet access in emergency situations like war. There is a high possibility that traditional connectivity systems will be damaged in the region where missile attacks and the like are frequent. Internet connectivity can also be provided with the help of a few small devices. It can also be carried from one place to another.
But it is unclear whether SpaceX will yield to Israel’s demands. Earlier, when Ukraine made a similar demand, Musk initially resisted. But later the company delivered the necessary Star Link equipment to Ukraine. Ukraine had the support of the US administration. The US is on Israel’s side in the Israel-Hamas conflict. They are also provided with necessary assistance.
It is estimated that more than 4,000 people have already been killed in the Israel-Hamas war. About 2,800 of them are in Gaza. More than 10,000 people have been injured. 30 Americans have also been killed in Israel.
